5th November 2025 … Let’s Keep the Sparks Positive, Not Explosive
On 5th November, it is National Stress Awareness Day and coincidentally, Bonfire Night too!
As fireworks light up the sky, it’s a timely reminder that while a few sparks can be beautiful, we don’t want things banging, flaring up, or exploding – especially at work.
Just as we take care when lighting a bonfire or handling fireworks, we need to take care of ourselves and our colleagues when it comes to managing stress.
This month is all about awareness, recognising the signs of stress, understanding its impact, and learning how to support ourselves and others before things reach breaking point.
What Is National Stress Awareness Day?
National Stress Awareness Day is an annual reminder to pause and reflect on how stress affects our physical and mental wellbeing.
It’s a chance to reduce stigma, encourage open conversations, and promote healthy, sustainable ways to cope with life’s pressures.
A little stress can be helpful, it gives us our “get up and go”, but when pressure keeps building without a release, the effects can be like a slow-burning fuse. Eventually, it takes its toll physically, mentally, and emotionally.

The Connection Between Stress and the Menopause
For those navigating the menopause, stress can be especially challenging.
When we experience stress, our bodies produce cortisol, the “fight or flight” hormone. But during menopause, oestrogen and progesterone levels are already fluctuating. Cortisol can suppress hormone production, meaning symptoms such as anxiety, poor sleep, hot flushes, and brain fog can flare up even more.
That’s why awareness, compassion, and support are so important – both personally and professionally.

As a manager or colleague, take time to notice signs of stress. Small adjustments, like reducing workload pressure, offering flexible working, or simply creating space to talk can help prevent stress (and tempers) from igniting.
When carrying out risk assessments or looking at reasonable adjustments, remember to consider stress levels. You might be surprised by how much this helps both wellbeing and performance.
When Workplace Stress Starts to Ignite
Stress doesn’t just affect individuals, it can impact whole teams or organisations.
Prolonged stress can lead to:
- Headaches and fatigue
- Increased sickness absence
- Tension between colleagues
- Burnout and resignations
- Reduced performance and morale
These aren’t just HR issues, they’re human issues. When stress builds, it can lead to explosions of conflict, communication breakdowns, and relationships burning out.
That’s why creating a culture of calm, empathy, and early support is key to avoiding those “fireworks” moments.

Turning Down the Heat: Mediation and Impartial Support
As an HR Consultant, I often see how unaddressed stress can escalate, especially during formal processes like grievances, disciplinaries, or investigations.
By the time people reach that point, many are already feeling “burnt out” or “broken”.
That’s where my work as an accredited workplace mediator comes in. Mediation provides a safe, structured, and psychologically secure space for real conversations before things spark out of control.
It helps people rebuild trust, find understanding, and agree on a positive way forward. It’s a win-win for individuals and organisations.
I also conduct impartial workplace investigations, offering independence and fairness. Because I’m external to the organisation, I can create space for openness and honesty, helping to keep the process calm, transparent, and stress-aware.

Final Thought: Keep Your Workplace Stress-Free, Not Stress-Full
On this Bonfire Night and National Stress Awareness Day, take a moment to pause and reflect:
✨ Are there any “sparks” of stress that might need attention?
✨ Do your people have the support they need to stay calm and balanced?
✨ What small actions could help prevent burnout or conflict before it catches light?
A workplace that recognises and supports stress is one where people feel safe to speak up, to be themselves, and to thrive.
So as the fireworks go off outside, let’s commit to keeping our workplaces bright and supportive, not banging, flaring, or burning out.
Let’s make stress awareness and wellbeing part of your everyday culture – today and every day.
